We recently had the privilege of working with Amanda Boganowski of Discovery Academy Inc., to create a web presence for her growing childcare facility and she provided us with every graphic and web designer’s fantasy: FULL CREATIVE FREEDOM.
Our primary goal, from a design standpoint, was to merge their offline perception as “a fun and exciting place to learn, discover and grow” with their new online web presence.
We begun the design by creating a landscaped background, a bright grassy valley of wildflowers, to serve as a natural setting for the existing kite logo. The big yellow sun, paper textured clouds, vibrant green grassy valleys, and cute little caterpillars were all custom and individually illustrated for the new website. We also worked with a photographer to help capture the fun and nurturing spirit of the daycare.
The layout is fresh and simple with easy-to-find tabbed navigation, two photo slide-shows on the front page and dynamic Polaroid-style photos on each of the sub-pages. We also incorporated an essence of “discovery” in the websites navigation as one of the main links reveals a portion of the website that is “underground”. The various textured layers mimic that of actual school paper as we wanted to incorporate a very handmade and hands-on aesthetic to the overall site.
We also utilized the ever-powerful and user-friendly WordPress platform as a Content Management System to provide the client with the ability to add, edit, and update content at a moment’s notice allowing them to be self-sufficient whilst also keeping the website relevant and up-to-date. Incorporating a Content Management System also reduces the need for the client to contract a webmaster for simple updates and therefore increases Amanda’s Return on Investment.
DiscoveryAcademyInc.com also is equipped with a secure password protected portion of the website dedicated to “Parent Only Access”. The secure “Parent-Access” section is visible to authorized users and is as pleasant to look at and as easy to manage as the main website, and contains several secure pages such as an event calendar, Bulletin Board, and Parent’s Forum where the Daycare Director (site administrator) uploads daily photos or videos and brief updates on the facility’s activities. The Parent’s Forum page also facilitates social networking as it provides parents with the ability to comment on posts and converse with other Daycare parents about the day’s events.
